Weekend Update October 25

Stonehedge Welcomes New York Times Bestselling Author/Illustrator, Troy Cummings.

As part of our PARP (Pick a Reading Partner) celebrations, our wonderful PTA brought Mr. Troy Cummings to Stonehedge to share the joys of writing and storytelling with our students.  As a child, Mr. Cummings spent all his time writing stories, drawing pictures, and keeping an eye out for monsters!  He says that he does pretty much the same things now, but he has also written and illustrated more than thirty children's books, including; THE NOTEBOOK OF DOOM series, THE BINDER OF DOOM series, CAN I BE YOUR DOG?, and THE EENSY WEENSY SPIDER FREAKS OUT (BIG-TIME!) He has also illustrated books by other authors, including CARING FOR YOUR LION (by Tammi Sauer), LITTLE RED GLIDING HOOD (by Tara Lazar), MIGHTY TRUCK (by Chris Barton), and VROOM VROOM GARBAGE TRUCK (by Asia Citro).  His visit was greatly appreciated by the students and staff.

Guest Readers
Throughout this month of PARP we've been very lucky to have some guest readers come in and read to our students. Mrs. Cunningham's class even had a furry friend come visit!

Weekend Update Oct 18

Halloween
With Halloween right around the corner... the children are growing so excited.  I wanted to share a few helpful guidelines:

Image result for pumpkins clip art
  • Classrooms will be having parties (times vary throughout the day)
  • You may send in a bag with a costume
  • costumes should be appropriate for school. Remember our little ones frighten easily, please no scary masks, blood, or weapons
  • only adults who are designated helpers will be permitted in the classrooms during parties
  • If you should be in need of a costume, please reach out to Mrs. Sheehan (school counselor) at 315-487-4633. She has many to give out.
Personally, I am excited for Pumpkin Hedge on October 25, 2019.  The pumpkins for the classrooms arrived this week.  Each class will be decorating a pumpkin for display. You can display a pumpkin, too (drop off is Thursday 10/24 3:45-5:30). To accommodate parking we have suggested times, but feel free to come when it is convenient for you:

K-1: 6:30
2-3: 7:00
4-5: 7:30

Fire Safety
We had our Fire Safety Assembly with Firefighter Dave Mazzoni and other members of Fairmount Fire Department.  The fire department discussed the importance of "stop, drop and roll," having a safe meeting place, checking your smoke detectors regularly, and calling 911.

Attached to the email you received, updating you that a new blog post had been posted, are a few fire safety activities for your family.  You can click on the attachment in the email to open the Fire Safety activities file.

GUEST READING has been a JOY!
I have enjoyed reading to many of our classrooms for PARP.  It is not everyday you get to wear your superhero cape and read My Principal is a Superhero.  Working with your children brings me such joy and happiness.  I am truly grateful to do this work.  Thank you Mrs. Colburn's class for the priceless pics!  (I'll save them forever)

I also read the Incredible Book Eating Boy by Oliver Jeffers.  Which lead to Isabella Dickinson bringing me a book recommendation!  I can't wait to read all about Nibbles the book eating monster. Thank you for your excitement, 1st graders.

Positivity Project
For P2 this week we focused on Integrity.  Students talked a lot about saying "what you mean and meaning what you say" and "doing the right thing even when no one is watching."  Next week, we'll focus on the trait of Perspective.  Perspective helps us make sense of the world around us. It gives us a sense of what truly matters.

Coming up next week...

Friday, October 25 - Author Troy Cummings visits Stonehedge
Friday, October 25 - "Pumpkin"hedge - 6:30 pm - 8 pm

Weekend Update October 11

What is going on around Stonehedge?

It has been a busy week.  First grade attended the Merry Go Round Playhouse production of the Boy Who Cried Wolf. What a creative, talented group of young actors!?!  The students were attentive audience members and really learned a valuable lesson in how important it is to always tell the truth!

Today was P2 Buddy Day!  5th graders worked with Kindergarteners, 4th graders buddy with 2nd graders and 3rd graders paired up with 1st grade.  They created cards to share with Veterans in celebration of Veterans Day.  It is so inspiring to see the older kids helping to model and lead the younger students.  It made my day!

Can you feel the excitement on this little kinders face?

Weekend Update Oct 4

Around Stonehedge this week...

Positivity Project Assembly

We had our first P2 Assembly this week!  It was AWESOME!  The students were impeccable audience members.  We celebrated our school community. We talked all about the traits we've learned so far. We sang and danced.  Mrs. Lawrence and Mrs. McCarthy's classes taught us a kindness song with hand motions.  It was so endearing I teared up watching them.  I even got to wear a superhero cape that displays my superhero trait of "LOVE."  Please ask your little one about it.  It was one of my most favorite memories of Stonehedge so far.  You could feel the energy and enthusiasm in the room.  Next week, we'll focus on Being Present and Giving Others your Attention

SOCKTOBER

At our P2 Assembly we introduced our SOCKTOBER Sock Drive.  Stonehedge will be collecting new socks the week of October 16-20th.  The socks can be sent in your child's backpack.  At the end of the week, the socks collected will be donated to our local Rescue Mission.  We hope to help those in need in the upcoming winter months.  #otherpeoplematter

Pick A Reading Partner (PARP)

We are really digging all of our PARP activities.  We had a very successful book fair.  Thank you to those families who supported us by purchasing books for their homes and for the classrooms, too.   The students are enjoying the guest readers who have been surprising them this week.  {A superhero may have read to a few classes today ;) } Monday, October 7th the first PARP slips are due.

Math centers

First grade has been really rocking out the math centers.  They are reviewing concepts taught previously, scooping, popping, and rolling dice.

Whisper Reading with Mrs. Simmons

In library...

Students are preparing for an author visit from Troy Cummings. Thanks to the PTA, he'll be here on Oct 25th.

Ways to help PTA

The PTA does more than just sponsor author visits.  They host the book fair, Picture Day, Pumpkinhedge, Spirit Days, and that is just to name a few.  You can help by signing up, attending meetings, volunteering to help out at events, and participating in fundraisers (Box Tops, Buffalo Wild Wings, Tops in Education, Shoparoo).

To eat Breakfast or not to eat breakfast?

Our mornings here at Stonehedge often begin with breakfast. Parents and guardians please talk to your children about breakfast.  If you want them to attend, we get the kiddos off the bus at 8:50.  If they eat at home, talk to them about not eating a second breakfast at school.  The easiest way to manage their account is through myschoolbucks. https://www.westgenesee.org/onepay-membership-feature-on-myschoolbucks/.
