Weekend Update June 19, 2020

Dear Stonehedge Family and Friends,
Well, what a year it has been?!?  It is hard to believe I have been a part of this amazing family for a year now.  And, what a joy it has been! Certainly, it was not the spring semester that any of us planned for or wanted, the COVID-19 pandemic did not stop us!  Our students, families, and teachers continued to work as hard as they could and persevered through it all.  I'd like to give a special shout out to the teachers and staff... your support, dedication, and flexibility during these last several months have been unforgettable. I wish everyone a wonderful summer filled with love, laughter, and READING! We are hopeful that we will return to a pretty much normal start to the school year on September 8, 2020. The district will be sending out updates as state and federal guidelines continue to be released.  Please feel free to reach out to me over the summer if you have any questions at all. I can be reached at asimmons@westgenesee.org

Library Books

We still have about 400 library books outstanding.  If you have library books, would you please return them to the school (there are carts in each lobby) or the public library is also taking our books for return.

5th Grade Virtual Jump Rope Club Performance

We are excited to present to you our FIRST EVER 5th Grade Virtual Jump Rope Club Performance Video! We are SO proud of our 5th graders! Their jump rope skills, perseverance, and overall resilience during this crazy time is truly amazing. While we are saddened to not be able to have our highly anticipated annual live performance, including partner and group tricks, we are EXCITED that we have the ability to still share all their hard work and creativity with you!

Yearbooks

The Stonehedge 2019-2020 yearbooks have not been shipped to us yet. We will notify parents when they arrive later this summer. As soon as we receive the yearbooks, we will share a plan for distributing them to all students.

Weekend Update June 12, 2020

Summer, Here We Come!

Wow--What a year 2019-2020 has been! I miss the students, families, and staff so very much. I can not wait to return in the fall and see you all again (Fingers Crossed!). I hope you have a summer filled with sunshine, laughter, and READING!  Please check out the distance learning portal where you can find activities for Art, Music, Library, and PE.  Don't forget to get those assignments turned into your Google Classrooms. You probably noticed a CKLA workbook in the bag you picked up from school.  This will be great practice and review for your child this summer.

School Supply Drive

For eleven years, the WG District Council has been providing school supplies for students in need.  Click here for information on how to register your child.

Report Cards

Report cards will be open on Schooltool starting Wed., June 24.  The report cards will be comments only due to the school closure.  Click here to access the instructions to view the reports. This is a short video that explains how to access the reports on Schooltool, too.   If you need a paper copy of the report cards mailed to you, please contact the building secretary Sue Tschernjawski at stschernjawski@westgenesee.org by June 23rd.

Chromebook/Laptop Return
Please return your Chromebook/laptop to the transportation building, which is located between the high school and Applebees, on one of the following dates. Remember to bring the power adaptor. If you have any questions, please contact wgtechhelp@westgenesee.org.
June 16 and June 18, 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
June 17 and June 19, 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

P2 Character Strength Focus: Be Present

It is important to be present.  We have an increasing number of distractions all around us. Life's notifications all have a tendency to pull us away from the present moment and what’s really important to us.  Don't forget to BE PRESENT in the moment and appreciate all that is around you.

Weekend Update June 5, 2020

Recently Superintendent, David Bills, wrote: "West Genesee Schools remain committed to the important conversations of social awareness, acceptance, and celebration of uniqueness that is part of our being stronger together."  I understand this can be a difficult topic to explain to our youngest students. On Saturday morning, June 6 at 10:00, Sesame Street is hosting a Town Hall for parents and kids called Coming Together: Standing up to Racism.  According to the overview found in this link, "The show will talk to kids about racism, the recent nationwide protests, embracing diversity and being more empathetic and understanding."  This website has information about how to watch the Town Hall and how to submit questions for the discussion.

Distance Learning

We are starting our last full week of school.  Keep up the good work and we are almost to summer vacation Don't forget to visit the online learning portal for library, PE, Music, P2, and counseling activities.  I hope that this June Happiness Calendar from the Greater Good Science Center will give you some ideas to use with your family to continue to find connection and joy! If you didn't order a yearbook, but still would like one.  Please email me at asimmons@westgenesee.org

Report Cards

Student report cards will be available through SchoolTool at the end of June.  Next week I will send a reminder about how to access report cards.  However, if you are in need of a paper copy, please email me or your child's teacher with that request.   We have one more full week of learning ahead.  Stay motivated, and finish the school year strong!

 Student Belongings

Thank you to all of the families who came to pick up their child's belongings.  It was wonderful to see so many of you.  We still have about 100 bags and many items in the "lost and found." If you have not come in, please do so on Tuesday, June 9th between 9 AM and 1 PM.  For the remaining lost and found items, you can rest assured that we will do great community service by making a donation to the local Rescue Mission.
Are you missing any of your things?

P2 Trait of the Week Creativity.

Creative people are able to look at the world in original ways. They are open to new experiences and have an imaginative and independent thought process. They are able to generate lots of different ideas and have the capacity to go after certain ideas they’ve generated with energy and enthusiasm. Creativity is a process that takes courage. Anytime you’re putting your original ideas into the world, you risk being criticized or even ostracized.
