Halloween Happenings

A Spooky Good Time at our Parade
Luckily, the rain held off and our princesses, pirates, Minecraft characters, and costumed paraders enjoyed a brisk walk around the parking lot and through the school. Cheering friends and family lined the parade path as everyone enjoyed watching the marchers. Our Blue team faculty and staff dressed up as cowboys and girls in support of our PTA's month-long reading program, PARP. PARP had a western/cowboy theme.

Time to Trot!
With November's arrival comes Stonehedge's annual Turkey Trot. On Wednesday, November 4, students, teachers, and parents are invited to run or walk as we raise donations for the United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF). During the run/walk students will receive one popsicle stick for each lap they complete in the front circles of the school. Each stick will be tallied from the event and we will see how many miles we complete as a school. (Rain date is November 5.)

Please see schedule below to see when your child will trot:

9:20 - 10:05 Fifth Grade
10:10-10:40 Kindergarten
10:45 - 11:30 Fourth Grade
11:35 - 12:05 First Grade
12:20 - 1:00 Third Grade
1:05 - 1:35 Second Grade

Second Graders are Going BATTY!
Yesterday was “Bat Day” in second grade. Students rotated through three stations with different teachers and learned about the differences between birds and bats, the two groups bats can be broken into (megabat and microbat), and how the bat wing is like the human hand.

Did you know? One bat can eat about 600 mosquitoes in one hour!

Please remember: There is a half-day for students on Tuesday, November 3. Dismissal is at 11:30 a.m.

October is Filled with Fun!

Orange is for October
October is National Bully Prevention month. Today is Unity Day. All students, staff, and faculty were encouraged to come together, wear orange, and send one large ORANGE message of hope, support, and unity!

Stonehedge's ADA-PEP counselors, Kathy Elmer and Susan Sheehan, united the school by working with students and teachers to create a long orange banner spanning the length of the connecting hallway between the Blue and Gold sides. The banner is filled with hand print cut outs. Each paper hand was decorated by a student or teacher and listed at least five positive character traits about them. Our UNITY banner is displayed in the corridor connecting our buildings. Everyone can make a commitment to bully prevention by signing the digital petition here!

First Graders Study Senses of Wonder
First grade students dove into learning about the five senses last week. On Friday, students rotated in between five stations. Each classroom featured activities relating to a different sense: taste, smell, touch, hearing, and sight.
Students were all ears in Miss Elmer's room.

These kids were excited to show off their completed sense booklets.

All eyes were on Miss Cantone as she discussed sight.

Mrs. Leonardis takes a sniff of a mystery ingredient.

Lemon wedges were a big hit during the taste session.

Miss Kolis demonstrates how to apply sample strips of different textures in her room while discussing sense of touch.

The Circus Came to Stonehedge
Horses, elephants, musicians, clowns, oh my! Three entertainers took on the part of circus folk for an educational and fun visit from the Merry Go Round Theatre to kindergarten classrooms. Each class was visited by an actor who talked about the power of imagination and taught students how to creatively imitate circus animals, performers, and musicians. Following the classroom visits, the entire grade headed to the gym for a big top performance with a very interactive audience.

PARP's Reading Partner Guest Readers Mosey into Classrooms
Dozens of guest speakers are visiting Stonehedge during the month of October and reading to students as a popular part of the PTA's PARP (Pick a Reading Partner) program. Along with PARP's cowboy theme, these guests enthralled readers in all grades. A few pictures follow:

Senator John DeFrancisco read to Miss Cantone's first grade students.

Board of Education member Neil Widrick read to Mrs. Lauricella's kindergarten class.

Former Stonehedge Principal Marilyn Stone read to second graders in Mrs. Lizzi's class.

New York State PTA President Bonnie Russell shared a story about Davy Crockett with Mrs. Farrow's second grade students.

It's Spooky How Soon Halloween Is!
As costumes get finalized and candy is purchased, we look ahead to our school's Halloween celebration. The Stonehedge Halloween Parade will kick off at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 30 beginning with our kindergarten children. Classes will parade out of the Blue Entrance and follow the sidewalks along the front of the building and to the bus circle. Parents may also view the parade as it tours around the Blue playground in the back of the building. Visitors are sure to have a great view at any point along this route. There is no need to sign into the building to view the Halloween Parade. Look for a letter coming home soon with more detailed information.

Kicking Off October and PARP

Howdy, Reading Partner!
We are kicking off October with PTA's rootin' tootin' reading program called PARP. Previously known as Parents as Reading Partners, PARP now stands for Pick a Reading Partner!
We here at Stonehedge are embracing this change and have invited many special guests into our school this month. Classrooms will be read to by local doctors, orthodontists, librarians, business professionals, politicians as well as our very own West Genesee administrators. We thank them for picking us as reading partners! Remember to take 15 minutes each day to spend reading with someone you care about. We hope you lasso lots of fabulous books this month!
Moreland the Magician wowed Stonehedge yesterday! He entertained students in every grade level with captivating magic tricks, audience participation, and stories supporting the idea that all books are magic. He encouraged children to visit libraries, read with a partner, and read at least 15 minutes a day.
Magician's assistant Lilly helped Moreland pull a magical scarf from his bag.
Riley was crowned with a special balloon in honor of Dr. Seuss.
Moreland knighted Jayden.

Open Library Nights: October 7 and October 21 from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.
