Weekend Update September 27

What's happened around Stonehedge this week?

Merry Go Round...

performed a VERY entertaining medley of Aesop's Fables for our 2nd graders.  Students marveled at various titles including, but not limited to, The Woodcutter and His Axe, The Milkmaid and Her Pail, The Goose and the Golden Eggs, The Ant and the Grasshopper, and The Fox and the Grapes. So many wonderful morales and lessons that many students connected to P2 traits we have been learning.

And in First Grade...

Mrs. Leonardis' class acts out the fable A Crowded Noisy House.

Ms. Kolis and Mrs. Nachtrieb's class (and all first graders) have been learning about the vibrations made by sound.

Mrs. Lawrence's class has been working hard on our trait of the week: Teamwork!

Positivity Project: Open-Mindedness

"If you don't go through life with an open mind, you will find a lot of closed doors."

 ~Mark W Perrett

Next week, we'll begin learning why people who use open-mindedness are more likely to make accurate decisions – and decisions that they won’t regret!  Special thank you to Ms. Cizenski for starting our bulletin board in the lobby to highlight the P2 character trait of the week.

Weekend Update September 20

“Never believe that a few caring people can’t change the world.

For indeed, that’s all who ever have.”

-Margaret Mead

Positivity Project is in Full Swing

To get it kicked off Mrs. McCarthy's 1st graders worked with Mrs. Hesler's 5th graders. They read a book about kindness, talked about kindness and how to be a good friend!  Isn't that what it's all about? What a great way to kick off the year.  This week we focused on curiosity and next week we'll be teaching teamwork.  I have already seen a lot of team work strategies being directly instructed during collaborative groups.  Second graders had to really think about team work to build their erosion models during Science.  I am looking forward to our first P2 assembly coming up soon!

Check out the EROSION UNIT in 2nd grade!

Ask your son or daughter what typical household items they decided to use to model grass, trees, or a break wall.

1st graders at work!

Check out the flexible seating going on in first grade!  Self selection of seating is a great way to make learning engaging and to empower students to know themselves as learners.

Bullying

In schools, the term bullying often comes up, but it is frequently misused.  Recently, another principal shared a few resources that I found to be informative.  I will always address negative behaviors, but it is crucial to use the appropriate vocabulary when talking with our kiddos.

Important Dates:

Monday, Sept. 23 – PTA Welcome Back Meeting – Blue Cafeteria - 6:30 pm
Tuesday, September 24 - Talk with the Superintendent - 7 pm - WGHS LGI
Wednesday, September 25 - Merry-Go-Round Theater visits grade 2
Tuesday - Thursday, October 1-3 - Book Fair - 4 pm-7 pm - Stonehedge Gold Lobby

Weekend Update for September 13

Time Flies When you are Having Fun

I can't believe our first full week is behind us!  It has been a great week.  We have been teaching expectations for learning in the classroom and all around the school. Teachers have been establishing the foundations for our school day routines.  And, if your house is anything like mine, the kiddos are TIRED!  I promise everyone will get into the routine of the busy day soon.  Just keep up those routines!

Learning all around the school!

2nd graders created mathematicians to describe their mathematical application strategies!

Kinders learned what PE is all about! Even how to use a locker room!

Students in Grades 1-5 participated in our universal screening in the library with our IS teachers.

Our school counselor, Mrs. Sheehan, has been into all of the Kindergarten rooms this week.

Kindergarteners have learning movement breaks between lessons.

And, just like that, have already started centers.

Kindergarten students read about the raccoon and the kissing hand.  Don't you love that book?  I know I do!  I think I'll read it with my daughter tonight.  It makes me miss her kindergarten self.

A HUGE STONEHEDGE WELCOME TO:

Mr. Knowlton is new to our school this year.  We are so grateful to have him helping our kindergarten students and teachers.

This week we were blessed to welcome Ms. Schep as an Early Literacy TA in Mrs. Vislosky's room!

We welcomed Mrs. Hayes to the cafeteria this week!

Positivity Project

“We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and
doing new things, because we’re curious...and
curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”
-WALT DISNEY

So far we've been doing an overview of our Positivity Project.  Next week starts our first character trait: Curiosity.  I think it is no coincidence that curiosity is the first trait.  I know for myself curiosity drives me to try and explore even when I am not too sure!

Some first grade classes have been reinforcing character traits with brag tags or brag bracelets!

Open House

Last night was my first open house at Stonehedge.  I was nearly moved to tears as I marveled at the over flowing rooms.  Kudos to you.  What a powerful message you have sent to your children.  Thank you teachers for your preparation for the evening.  What a great way to start our year.
